Through its subsidiary Axpo Iberia in Madrid, Axpo has been active in the Portuguese wholesale business for many years, primarily with energy supply to industrial customers. With the takeover of the power and gas supply company Goldenergy, which has over 250,000 customers, Axpo was able to strengthen its position in the market considerably and to target new customer groups. In 2017, Axpo opened its own subsidiary in Lisbon in order to advance growth in Portugal on all levels.

A long-term PPA from Axpo has made possible the construction of the first non-subsidised solar plant in Évora/Portugal.

Axpo is not only active in the area of origination in the markets of Eastern and Southern Europe as is the case, for example in Romania or Turkey. Axpo also carries out power transports between individual countries in the Balkan region, for example from Montenegro and Serbia to Hungary and from Croatia to Slovenia. Serbia is one of the most important hubs for power trading for the Southeastern European market because it borders eight countries.

Albania and Greece are transit countries for the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) planned by Axpo and its activities there play a key role in the development of the project on the local level.

Among other things Axpo Bulgaria is responsible for back office services in the international trading business in the area of Energy Operations.

The Ukraine plays a key role for European gas supply, and, as a result, it is an extremely important region for leading energy trading companies like Axpo. The country is an important transit route for Russian natural gas flowing to the West, has huge storage capacities for natural gas and belongs to the three largest natural gas producers in Europe. In order to be able to expand in Eastern European gas trading, Axpo opened a subsidiary in Ukrainian capital of Kiev in the spring of 2018.
